Who doesn't like oreos? Who doesn't like to make moon shapes out of oreos? This activity consists of moon lessons to cover science, ELA, and art. It has been approved and tested in classrooms that students will be engaged and will have fun!
Objective: Students will learn about different phases of the moon, different shapes of the moon, read stories about the moon and will develop and produce art work on the theme of moon
Subjects covered: science, ELA, and art
Differentiation: Children will be paired with a strong student who is willing to help.
Part 1: different phases/shapes of the moon
Description: Students will be given a little booklet on explaining why we have different phases of the moon and different types of moon. Teacher will read the booklet with the students to explain different phases with the pictures first before they colour their own booklet.
Materials: Printed booklet, pencil crayons, markers to colour the booklet
Other considerations: This activity will touch on science and art subject so it may take longer than a block. If that is the case, students can start with this work (science) and leave it for the last block (art).
Part 2: Placing the moon on the appropriate location
Description: Teacher will read a book called “Papa, please get the moon for me” to start and refresh their memory of the phases of the moon. Students will receive a worksheet where they have to cut out the circles (moon) and draw each shape of the moon and place on the appropriate spot.
Materials: Worksheets, “Papa, please get the moon for me” book, students’ booklet
Other considerations: This lesson will touch on ELA, art, and science. At the front of the desk there will be the book “Papa, please get the moon for me” for them to look at to find the right spot to glue the moon. Also, they will use their own booklets that they have colored previous class to find the right spot.
(In the appendix: there are weekly schedule on the theme of the moon, teachers are free to use those resources as well, if time allows with the students)
Part 3: Using oreo to create their own cycle of moon phases
Description: Using their own booklet or worksheet where they have located all the phases of moon, students will make their own moon phases with oreos. They will be given 8 split oreo cookies and students will use spoons to move the cream off the cookie to model the correct phase of the moon and label each moon with (new moon, full moon, waxing crescent, waning crescent, first quarter, last quarter, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous). After teacher will check if they have correctly labeled them and here, the teacher can quickly review/evaluate the student 1 to 1.
Materials: Oreos, booklet, worksheet, spoons
Other consideration: Before starting the activity, make the rules clear. No eating the oreo before you finish making the phases of the moon.
Extension activity: Add a story time with a classic book called "Good Night Moon"
