The Lorax activities for cycle 1

Activity 2: The Lorax

The Lorax activity is a must do through out all cycles! This activity is geared toward more cycle one students to cover ELA, ERC, and science. Kids will love its interactive and hands on activities.

  • Students will develop a heart to care for the earth.

  • Students will develop a sense of citizenship to care for the earth.

  • Students will think about the ways that they could to do help the earth.

  • Students will learn about basic elements in the story

Subjects covered: science, ELA, ERC, math

Part 1: Reading the book “The Lorax”

Description: Teacher will read the book “The Lorax” to the students. When listening, ask them to pay close to attention to the characters, pictures, places, and colours.

Materials: “The Lorax” book

Other consideration: Bring in the physical book but it will also be great to have pdf form of the book so that students can easily see all the pictures.

Part 2: Doing an ELA activity

Description: Teacher will hand out graphic organizers for students to organize the storyline. Teacher will load the graphic organizer on the smartboard and try filling it in with students. Here, students will participate to share their ideas and teacher will summarize in concise words to put it in the organizer.

Materials: Graphic organizer, smartboard

Other consideration: Make sure all students are participating. There may be some students who cannot write fast enough to move on but just make sure that student is also participating my speaking up.

Part 3: Thinking about our Earth

Description:

Teacher will hand out another graphic organizer that asks questions such as:

  • The Lorax spoke for the trees. What would you speak for? What would you say?

  • What is the natural resource that is important in this story?

  • What goods are being produced from this natural resource?

  • Who are the consumers for this product?

  • How is the problems solved at the end of the story?

  • Building a community: urban, suburban, rural

Materials: graphic organizers, smartboard

Other consideration: These questions could be a little challenging for grade 2 students, so teachers should break it down for them to understand easily.

Extension: This activity can easily be extended by including art activites.
